Electronic engineering is often confused with electrical engineering. Electrical engineering is concerned with generating and distributing electrical power. Whereas electronic engineering is concerned with the design, development and application of electronic circuits and software. Electronic engineering has applications in many different areas, such as robotics, automation and biomedical devices. There are many specialist areas within this field of work, and a vast number of industries which experts of this profession.

Electronic engineering often has a cross over with computer engineering, as they have many core topics in common. In an electronic engineering course, your will encounter modules on engineering and mathematics, as standard with any engineering course. You will also have to engage in the basic sciences for engineering. More specific modules that you may encounter are:

After graduating with a degree in electronic engineering, you may find yourself working in the development process of consumer electronics, automotive systems or any given device with electrical components. As with electrical engineering, electronic engineering graduates are sought after due to the high-tech society we live in. However, although this occupation is sought-after by firms, the estimated job growth over the next 10 years is slower than average.

The majority of Electronic engineers work in industries such as pharmaceuticals, healthcare, manufacturing and food processing. Quite often the opportunity may arise for a Electronic engineer to work in a national lab. A graduate with this degree could secure a profession such as:

Salary Levels

The U.S. Bureau of Labour Statistics does not differentiate in the pay of electronic and electrical engineers. The 2021 median pay for electronic engineers was $101,780, or just over $48 per hour. This figure increases if an individual wishes to specialize. For example, by specialising in embedded systems, the median pay increases to $109,020 per year.
