ALAN WOOD, CHIEF EXECUTIVE, SIEMENS PLC
Alan Wood (52) was appointed Chief Executive of Siemens plc on 1st April 1998, and in this role is responsible for the overall management, strategic development, and co-ordination of Siemens' businesses in the United Kingdom.
Prior to taking over this role, Mr Wood was group managing director of the Industry and Energy businesses of Siemens plc, where he ran a diverse range of operations, including power transmission and distribution systems, automation, environmental systems, project engineering, and drives and standard electrical products. In this position, which he took up in 1991, Mr Wood was also responsible for two of Siemens' major manufacturing sites in the UK: Congleton, the company's world wide manufacturing base for standard variable speed drives; and Oldham, where Siemens Measurements Limited designed and manufactures the world's first electronic gas meter.
Alan Wood joined Siemens in 1981, and since then he has held a number of senior executive positions within the company, including manufacturing director, and later managing director, of one of the UK's leading gas and electricity measurement companies, Siemens Measurements Limited. In 1987, he took over responsibility for the company's Electronic Components, Telecommunications Networks and Office Systems operations.
Prior to joining Siemens, Mr Wood held a number of executive positions within manufacturing industry, including that of managing director of an electric motor manufacturer, and plant manager for Unilever.
In February 2000, Alan Wood was appointed Chairman of the Confederation of British Industry's National Manufacturing Council (NMC). This role will see him supporting the interests of UK manufacturers within the CBI membership and with the Government. As Chairman of the CBI's North West branch from 1996 to 1998, Mr Wood was closely involved in the development of business within the region.
Having attained a first class honours degree in mechanical engineering from Manchester University, Alan Wood also has a masters degree in business administration from Harvard University.
Married with two daughters, Alan Wood lists his leisure interests as swimming, gardening and family life.
