Greg C. Smith is chairman, president and chief executive officer of Ford Motor Credit Company and a group vice president of Ford Motor Company, effective Sept. 12, 2002. He is responsible for all operations of Ford Credit worldwide, including all regional sales offices, dealer support, field operations, product development, marketing, and insurance products globally. Mr. Smith also is responsible for Ford Credit's North American Diversified operations, which includes Commercial Lending Services as well as the PRIMUS, AMI, Triad, and Volvo financing subsidiaries.
Prior to this assignment, he was elected president and chief operating officer of Ford Credit, effective August 1, 2001. He previously served as president of Ford Credit North America, responsible for all operations affecting dealers and customers throughout North America.
Smith joined Ford Motor Company in 1973 as an engineer with Truck Operations. He subsequently held a number of engineering and product planning positions within Truck Operations until 1985, when he moved to Ford Division as Truck and Powertrain Marketing Plans manager. In 1987, he was appointed manager, Car Marketing Plans for Ford Division, and in 1989 he became regional marketing manager for the Central Region. Later that year, he moved to Lincoln-Mercury Division to become the Dallas district operations manager.
In 1990, Smith was named director, Strategy and Advanced Planning for Car Product Development, a position he held until 1993, when we was appointed executive director, Strategic Planning and External Affairs for the Ford Financial Services Group. In 1994, Smith was named vice president, New Business Development for Ford Credit's Diversified Operations.
In 1995, Smith was elected to executive vice president, International Financing Operations. In this position, he was responsible for Ford Credit operations in more than 30 countries around the world.
Smith is on the Board of Junior Achievement of Southeastern Michigan, is a trustee to the Eastern Michigan University Foundation Board and is chairman of the American Financial Services Association.
Born in Toledo, Ohio, Smith holds a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and a master's degree in business administration from Eastern Michigan University.
