Joachim Milberg was the Chairman of German car manufacturer BMW Group from February 1999 to May 2002. He gained his doctorate in production engineering at the Technical University of Berlin in 1972, he then moved into industry and became an Executive Manager at Werkzeugmaschinenfabrik Gildemeister AG. In 1978 he became head of the Automatic Lathe Division at Gildemeister before, in 1981, accepting a position as Professor for Machine Tools and Operations Research at Munich Technical University.
Far from being a `dry academic', Joachim Milberg impressed his students as a `reliable, technically-minded person', and even after joining BMW, as Member of the Board of Management with responsibility for Production, he continued to lecture once a week until only a couple of years ago.
Professor Milberg retired in May 2002 but believes that his connection with Cranfield University will give him an incentive to make his own personal contribution to the future generations of young engineers.
