James B. Irwin, Lunar Module Pilot
James B. Irwin was born on March 17, 1930, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He
earned his B.S. in Naval Science from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1951 and an
M.S. in Aeronautical Engineering and Instrumentation Engineering from the
University of Michigan in 1957. He was chosen in the fifth group of astronauts
in 1966. He was backup lunar module pilot for Apollo 12, and was the eighth
man to walk on the Moon. He resigned from NASA and the Air Force in July 1972.
