President of the Senate William V. Irons was born in Providence on May 11, 1943. He graduated from East Providence High School, earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of New Hampshire in 1966, and a Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) certificate from American College in 1978. President Irons is the proprietor of Irons & Associates Insurance Agency. He resides in Rumford with his wife, Mary Durand. He has three grown daughters, Joan Cronin, Sarah Irons, and Katherine Sudol, and two granddaughters, Caroline Mary and Meredith Claire Cronin.

President Irons represents District 8, which includes sections of Pawtucket and East Providence. He was first elected to the Senate in a special election on June 21, 1983. He was the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Corporations from 1993 to November 2000, when his Democratic colleagues unanimously elected him Majority Leader. On January 7, 2003, he was unanimously elected by his Democratic and Republican colleagues to serve as the first President of the Senate in Rhode Island history.

President Irons has also served as a member of the Senate Committees on Labor; Health, Education and Welfare; and Special Legislation. The graduate engineer and insurance professional also chaired two committees that studied the Providence Place Mall. President Irons is an ex officio member of all Senate Committees, and oversees a full-time staff of 50 people, and additional part-time employees used during the months the Senate is in session.
