Elected 1st Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Lithuania

Elected Chairman of the Lithuanian Democratic Labour Party (LDLP)

Elected a member of the Supreme Council – the Reconstituent Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania

Appointed Deputy Prime Minister of the 1st Government of the Republic of Lithuania

Elected President of the Republic of Lithuania by direct suffrage, receiving 60 percent of all votes. Pursuant to the Constitution, suspended his membership in the LDLP

By Presidential Decree of 4 July 2001 appointed Prime Minister. Started his office on 12 July 2001.

Doctor of Science in Economics, Doctor honoris causa (Honorary Doctor) of Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, Kiev University, Minsk University of Humanities, Kaunas University of Technology.

Married, has got two daughters and five grandchildren.
