Elected 1st Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Lithuania
Elected Chairman of the Lithuanian Democratic Labour Party (LDLP)
Elected a member of the Supreme Council – the Reconstituent Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania
Appointed Deputy Prime Minister of the 1st Government of the Republic of Lithuania
Member of the Seimas. Elected Chairman of the Seimas
Acting President of the Republic of Lithuania
President of the Republic of Lithuania by direct suffrage, receiving 60 percent
of all votes. Pursuant to the Constitution, suspended his membership in the
2001 Elected Chairman of the Social Democratic Party
