H.E. Kassahun Ayele

Ambassador of Ethiopia to the United States

Ambassador Kassahun Ayele was born on June 17, 1949 in Bale Goba, Ethiopia. With over 28 years of engineering, consultancy, management and policy-related work experience, Ambassador Kassahun was the Minister of Trade and Industry from August 1995-October 2001. In this post, he became intimately acquainted with the U.S. African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), successfully negotiating Ethiopiaís certification for the Act. He also led several successful promotional trade missions to foreign countries, including the United States, in which he has traveled extensively, working with government officials, business leaders and Ethiopians residing here to promote trade and investment to Ethiopia.

Ambassador Kassahun worked in the Office of the Prime Minister from 1993-1995, where he was the Head of the Productive and Support Services Bureau, following up on the activities of economic sector ministries and reviewing their performance against their annual plans. For a year prior to joining the Prime Ministerís office, he was Acting General Manager of the Development Projects Study Authority in Addis Ababa, where he managed experts in the review and implementation of government-financed development projects and supervised two state-owned consultancy enterprises. From 1982-1992, Ambassador Kassahun was the Leading Project Engineer and Senior Project Engineer for a state-owned consultancy enterprise known as the Industrial Projects Service, where he conducted feasibility studies, reviewed designs and prepared tender documents for supply and construction of industrial plants. He served as a Technical Expert at the Ethio-Libyan Joint Sugar Company from July 1983-January 1984, and from 1973-1983 he worked in the Metahara Sugar Factory at Metahara, Ethiopia, in capacities ranging from Shift Engineer up to Factory Chief Engineer.

The Ambassador has also served as a member and Chairman of the Ethiopian Society of Mechanical Engineers, and has served as a member of management boards for various Ethiopian enterprises, including Ethiopian Airlines, the National Bank of Ethiopia, the Export Promotion Agency of Ethiopia, the Ethiopian Investment Authority, the Basic Metals and Engineering Industries Agency, and the Public Enterprises Supervising Authority. He has also served as a member of the Advisory Council of the Environment Protection Authority and as a member of the Ethiopian National Council for HIV/AIDS.

Ambassador Kassahun received his M.SC. in Tribology in Machine Design from Leeds University, Leeds England, in 1988, and holds a B.SC. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Haile Sellasie I University in Addis Ababa. He is married with two children.
