Some of you on this list may already know I am concerned over the lack of visibility of the engineering profession. You also may know for many many year I have served as Public Relations Chair for www.seaoi.org .
While surfing the NET on news of the engineering I came across the news of the Cable News Network (http://www.csntv.org)

What if anything do any of your know about this effort ? Seems to me to be a great idea except for one possible omission.
Why not
include ENGINEERING into the program?
Cable Science/Engineer Network. CSEN
All TOO often Engineer is left out of the discussion
of what are really ENGINEERING achievements. The Space Program is a classic
example. It is not Rocket Science ..............................
But ROCKET ENGINEERING!!!
Here's yet another example.................
Check this story that appeared recently in the Chicago Tribune
URL:
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chicago/chi-0312120096dec12,1,1874003.story
Take note that the word Engineer nor ENGINEERING does not appear anywhere in the story.
Building-- constructing ROBOTS in not about science but really engineering.
How many of you have read stories where ENGINEERING is left out of the discussion.
While the effort to establish a television network devoted to science topics, issues, stories is a nobel effort ( Hey, Alfred NOBEL was an engineer) efforts should -- could be made to also include ENGINEERING STORIES into the mix.
All TOO often engineering achievements are attributed to science or even others.
Just yesterday the plans for the construction for the replacement of the WTC (World Trade Center ) were released.
I surfed the NET (Go to GOOGLE and surf on "FREEDOM TOWER") seeking information on the structural engineering for the tower.
In the hundreds upon hundreds of stories about the "FREEDOM TOWER" there was nary a mention of Engineer, nor Engineering.
Design and building skyscrapers is not so much much about architecture but really about ENGINEERING!!!!!
How does the building
withstand earthquakes and windstorms.
How do you get water up to the top of the building???
How is the building protected against fires???
What are the transportation systems for moving people up and down the tower?
I did however find a few
(very few) references to engineering of the Freedom Tower in the following:
http://slate.msn.com/id/2092959/
As it appears the Cable
Science Network is still in the planning - development stages,
maybe you, your organization can provide input so that ENGINEERING achievements--topics
are covered. Maybe your organization can provide support the this network??
I can think of several examples of stories for starters:
THE DRAPER PRIZE

National Engineers WEEK www.eweek.org
Student Engineering Outreach
efforts to students and the public

Design (Engineering) Design
Competitions
www.futurecity.org
www.usfirst.org
http://bridgecontest.usma.edu/
http://www.iit.edu/~hsbridge/database/search.cgi/:/public/index
And of course ENGINEERING achievements such as a new bridge or skyscraper.
Sincerely,
Engr.
